Watch the Pirate Bay documentary premiere!
User spam & authentication
Hi Noisebridge friends,
I want to work on user creation spam, that overruns the logs. I think I want to add an extra captcha, noisebridge-specific, maybe a secret we distribute in the space, or rotate, or ask a Discord bot for (a One-Time Password).

I just got the chance to check out your beautiful space and wanted to share my film about the Pirate Bay with your community.
I want to regain access to rack infrastructure, make a new Bitwarden vault for rack passwords (so they're *somewhere* and can be passed along). So many things are down or broken. jitsi.noisebridge.io, discuss.noisebridge.io. And we're paying for infra, and people who last managed it are at far corners of the city or of the world, and the few we are in contact with jealously guard DNS access and similar. C'mon.

We are releasing the film for free online from the premiere on Jan 8th.
(I'm open to better places to put this--I suppose a Rack page, but need traffic, and wiki watchers at all.)

Please check out the trailer here

:That is an excellent question! The gist is that it's really good for visitors to know that they will have a better experience (not get kicked out etc..) if they have a sponsor when they are in the space. This is because of the new "members and their guests only policy". So I'm guessing that the instructions to new visitors should try to strike a balance between "Visitors Welcome!" and "Here's exactly how to be an approved guest!" and "Look how easy it is to be an approved guest!" or something like that. And that is what is being worked on now... and you are participating in that very process! --gadlen (talk) 19:28, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Really? Protecting the front page from random anonymous trolling (not even good trolling, just people opportunistically replacing the front page with racial slurs and porn), and making it so that people have to register an account (any account, even a bullshit account) is "bossing"? Last I checked, we had a lock on the front gate to Noisebridge, is that a problem too?

Look, the admins are getting overwhelmed. This is an experiment. The protection level is "Block new and unregistered users." That means the "barrier to entry" is still pretty low -- make an account and then write something in a user page (doesn't even have to be "real"). You could even make several accounts. The point is to increase friction, not to prevent people from editing.

Is this unreasonable? I am asking honestly. Educate me. Nthmost (talk)

JeffreyATW wrote:"food/music not necessary for rebooting the space"

The negatives of food/music are that there has been a rodent problem re:food, plus the idea that loudspeaker music should definitely not interrupt classes.

OTOH, for those not going out of their way to be killjoys (i.e., the typical "Bad Cop"), there should be little other problems with HAVING food/music around while rebooting the space. These are even likely to be good incentives to draw we folks to help out a bit more with the refurbishing action going on.

Sure is an unprecedented number of retaliatory clampdowns all concentrated within a mere 73-minute period.
Straying away from being a good example of Noisebridge's Vision of Excellence now, are we?

OTOH, the primary benefit of allowing beneficial Anon-user edits is that this probably will, in fact, enhance Noisebridge's ability to meet (and exceed!) the Reboot IndieGoGo's fundraising expectations with respect to other concurrent fundraising events happening throughout the area that so many of us are aware of. Indeed, User:JeffreyATW's rather arbitrary decision to overly pack the main Wiki's 'Upcoming Events' section with nearly a dozen individual listings and his elected semi-Nuclear Option may neither be particularly helpful of overall Class-A-Thon scheduling+attendance nor helpful, ultimately, for current Reboot IndieGoGo fundraising efforts.

As of this writing, the ultimate IndieGoGo Reboot fundraising goal of $25k remains quite a ways off, so beneficial options that better encourage donations ought not to get so casually dismissed by User:JeffreyATW.

(A much less significantly-related aside is the fairly straightforward fact that User:JeffreyATW simply cannot block all Anon-user IP addresses solely by himself, whether those of beneficial contributors or otherwise.)

Again, the pulling off of User:JeffreyATW's semi-Nuclear Option above shall be submitted for review.
User:JeffreyATW may now proceed to retaliate against Discussion such as this by arbitrarily clamping down Anon-user edits in this section, i.e., this very comment.
Hello Noisebridge Talk,

I am new to Raspberry Pi. I have one with a camera and usb wifi antenna, and would like to control it remotely. Are there any Raspberry Pi sessions at Noisebridge? Alternatively, is anyone familiar enough with Raspberry Pi that is willing to show me the way?

Thanks,

Brian

Blanking this page, since I'm using it to explain what Talk pages are for the Wiki Wednesday class. Looks like in 2020 it was used as a sort of diary.

Let's now use this for its intended purpose more or less -- to host meta-discussion about the page it's attached to. For example, to suggest ideas about what should be on the main page. --Lizzard (talk) 01:17, 13 August 2021 (UTC)

 • mw:Help:Talk helps introduce wiki Talk: norms with positive-action advice.
- Often using the Add topic link, from the talk page, to create a new section for a new topic, is easier for all.
- E.g. I'm a fan of * [comment] instead of : [comment] for threaded discussion.
- For Signatures, use --~~~~, now in the CharInsert/edittools footer as well. See mw:help:Signatures for more.--Mcint (talk) 18:54, 12 May 2024 (PDT)

User spam & authentication

[edit source]

I want to work on user creation spam, that overruns the logs. I think I want to add an extra captcha, noisebridge-specific, maybe a secret we distribute in the space, or rotate, or ask a Discord bot for (a One-Time Password).

C'mon.

(I'm open to better places to put this--I suppose a Rack page, but need traffic, and wiki watchers at all.)
