Due to constant breakage of the sewing machines, we're asking all users of Noisebridge's sewing machines—including the home machines—to take [https://www.meetup.com/noisebridge/events/vljvjryzpbgb/ a training session] to learn how to use our machines properly and thereby not break them.

Getting on this list doesn't qualify you to use the industrial machines, which are very different beasts in important and dangerous ways. That requires separate training.
For safety and to prevent breakage of our machines and degradation of our tools, we strongly suggest a sewing class before use of the sewing room. Before use of the large industrial machines, we require a certification class. Classes are announced on our discord channel and on the Noisebridge Meetup page. Sewing 101 and other entry level classes teach basic tool use and use of the domestic machines. Sewing 201 and intermediate classes provide pathways to certification in our industrial machines. Many Sewing 200 or above classes require Sewing 101 or similar level of experience. Only with certification do we allow use of the industrials.

In sewing we take safety as our top priority. Sewing machines, cutting implements, tools and sewing notions are capable of severe damage if used incorrectly. We recommend, at minimum, an introductory sewing class before use of the sewing room.

However, we understand that many people have had sewing skills, taken lessons from a young age or from other sources. Thus, we only require specific in-house training for use of our industrial machines.
