How's it all going

Pyconaut- looking at filecoin grants for decentralized web infrastructure, will post stuff on Discuss soon.

Discussion
Would be happy if someone looked into ADA or education grants that SF might have.

Discussion Item 1
Also hydroponics, disaster prep, and energy independence grants could be useful to research.
how we are opening?

Rebooting philanthropy and member system (access tokens, etc)
X It's excellent to give noisebridge money.
Will we be open june or july.  Will we have member times, open hours, project hours, etc.

Tyler- Key managment will be importaint.  How will we set up the new one.
Consensus
Consensus is how the Noisebridge Membership may change how Noisebridge works.

It seems like we need to figure out
(How does Consensus work? What types of things are good for formal Consensus? What is small-c consensus? What is a "block"?)

X- Seems like right now there are almost no active philanthropist. As there is no easy way to track it. Same with big M Members.  Payments are only a small part of this.
2 types: Little c: general buy-in for things that are not permanent.

Big C: Funding, permanent changes to teh space. Takes at least 2 meetings: A proposal, and a Consensus test.

c - did they stop paying monthly dues?
C Consensus requires a quorum of least 4 M Members.

X- This is really about sponsorship, and opening to sponsored individuals.

Pyconaut- Restarting Philanthropy from the ground up might be the best option, ans there are quite a few people who Members could

X- We are probably not ready for a 24 hour access to the space right now.  Which is what philanthropy was mainly helpful for.
Proposals from last week
(Add any items which are consensed upon or someone has raised a principle objection for to the Consensus Items History page.)

X- Having 2 people needed to open the space could be very useful for going forward.
Proposals for next week
(Add any new items for consensus to the Current Consensus Items page.)

Tyler- We dont really need to have people there 24 hours right now, since many people seem to be more about building out the new space right now, rather then spending long hours on personal projects.
Discussion
X- Even if we had things like the laser running it would still be hard to let people use it, there are some safety and security issues.  Right now we need better community understanding about how access to the space will work.  We want to keep people from randomly waking in even when we are "open".  We do not have any good physical barriers to seperate parts of the space, and it could turn into a free for all.
Pre meeting -

pyconaut - if we upgrade the driveway gate and have some kind of door there for access control. Two seperate doors for access, gate door and front door like at 2169.
Dan will remain a non-Member as long as will be tolerated. That said he appreciates the structure and level of commitment that the few members that there are represent

Tyler- That makes sense and could work well.
? The social reality that was created by the physical space at old bridge is gone. Things have also changed a lot since that time

X- With hours as well, many noisebridgers usually come out at night, but we should definitly look at noisebridge during the day.
Dan We’ll figure it out—who shows up shows up

X- having a gate door would also help with people feeling safe and easier to leave and enter the space.
? There’s a cost of the social fabric gone, and we need to make a new social fabric. Chance to remake the social fabric and physical fabric of the space

tyler/moderator: lets circle back to philanthropist and membership. proposing a clean slate on philanthropists. focus on members re-inviting people they have/would sponsor.
Dan challenge is to keep the tapestry as we reboot

dan: oppurtunity to do some outreach, hey how ya doing sort of thing. Joyous and non-grueling
? We can decide social norms now, and bring new bridgers into that as they return

py: All philanthropist that reapply get a new noisebridge shirt. OR sticker. Considering the overall value they provide, something like a shirt is cheap. New space, rules are pretty much the same. But we need to restart at the ground and rebuild our tower of HACKERDOM into the sky anew!
Dan --We'll let people figure it out as they show up.

x: sounds good. I'd like to see it as a piece of hardware. Maybe part of access, or just something involved in useing the space. RFID, circuit badge, etc. Maybe a way of philanthopists/members being visible in the space
? What do we plant in the garden here? Space layout affecting our new socialfabricand what people do in the space.

Tyler - Like defcon badges
Noisebridge is an international city, we can quickly boot up thanks to our core methods of operations being already well defined.

Pyconaut- Or guild badges
X First meeting in a long time at a physical Noisebridge. A deceptively small number of people actually maintain the continual functioning of the space.

Dan: The trust model for philo's is that they know to open and close the space. My expectations are that there is another level of wherewithall(spelling?) of what philo's were expected to do in the past. Knowing 2169 !== knowing 272. Philanthropists are facilitators. And that's a hard job right now, and until we get a critical mass of people know know what's up. We need designated, committed volunteers.

Dan- No one knows what is actually going on at 272 fully, it will be hard to get all the philantropists up to date on the new space, probably for the next few months as so much is changing.

Dan- What we want to happen and how we can get good faciilitators on board to help with the new space.  Looking forward to business as usual again, but not yet, still going to take some time. Calling for more facilitors.

x: check in with moderator on topic, and proposing idea of "build" day to start at least a once a week critical mass.

Tyler- it makes sense to have philanthropists reapply as this is a new space and new all new setup.  And build days could get people up to date on the new space and help them prepare to apply.
Discussion Item 1
X: sounds like general consensus on rebooting philanthropy with reaching out to individuals to re-apply and clarifying what philanthropy at 272 means and looks like.
Cultural fabric at Noisebridge--what do we want our relationship with surveilance to be?

X- we need to give a lot of tours and the tours will change. We've also not really figured out how to do virtual tour/introductions. We can start the tours small, since stuff is constantly changing.
ex: value in remote participation vs. Chelsea Manning capability

Dan: thoughts on orientation/tours. aka: onboarding. I've been trying to do for the last six months or so. Presumption is that volunteers are there to do some useful work and they don't necisarly know what to do. Needs some assesment do you want me to tell you what I want you to do? Letting volunteers in and get comfortable with the space and get to konw that they can contribute to some of thinking as well.

Dan: If someone really wants something to do, sure, what I really want you to do is everything I'm doing, like introducing other people to the space. It's not just a tour it's really onboarding volunteers. Not entirely about showing people how to use the space for what they want to do, but also to help other people figure out how to use the space as well.

pyconaut: starting with well done tours of what we need peoples help with. still want to do a walk around tour of the new space so people can start thinking of ideas. after a general tour of the entire space with very little detail I would go over specific details of what we need to better at the beggining.

Pyconaut- How do we announce that things like mics or cameras are active in the space.  How do we let people know where they are.  Should we add a no recording area?

Sophia- really don't like thje feeling of being recorded while I'm at the space, feed to internet is also not comfortable.

How do we have remote classes.

Discussion Item 2
X This has been while NB has been closed. I also don't like the idea, we should discuss.
money stuff & operations

Tyler: suggested some investment options. Really high level. Will need to spend some more time preparing some options.
X We could have places that are explicitly mic'd and camera's and by default not recorded.

Sophia Should some places (really) be permanently recorded?

Pyconaut- I was looking at grants and stuff and found some interesting stuff from Filecoin, who just donated to the Internet Archive.  https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20210404/18351646551/filecoin-foundation-donates-10-million-worth-filecoin-to-internet-archive.shtml#:~:text=The%20Filecoin%20Foundation%20has%20donated,single%20donation%20to%20the%20organization.
NGALAC is a good model, as it has an on air sign and mic and camera cutoffs.

I think we could get a grant from them if we have a project that they would like, or if we can show that noisebridge has value in a decentralised web future.
Dan Traditionially, 5mof is streamed, other examples of recording occasionally in space that can be done without everyone in space recorded.

https://fil.org/grants/
Also, mics are legally potentially dicey, and not good feels. Cameras are lign of sight.
https://github.com/filecoin-project/devgrants

Their project is related to IPFS if you know what that is.
CA is an all parties consent state--can't record people without their consent.

X getting to noisebridge you will walk by ton of cameras and mics, and a lot of Amazon devices are starting to do more indepth surveilance.

X as an example of excellence, the camera live here for the meeting isn't capturing anyone in the public walking by.

X Need more people to step up and take responsibility for managing space. That's the void that cameras serve now.

I think NB should pass the "crazy ex" test.
specifically, all members should be able to access the space without being identified by a Member that might theoretically be an ex of the person in question.

For elevator- Landlord is concerned about reassesment of property taxes, but would like building imprvments that add property value.  We should wait until the first rent payment to the landlord
    Use the space anonymously

Water bill has been re-imbursed and check sent to building management. Recap from previous discussion, we had an > $800 bill that was sent to the building management as well, they paid it, and then paid it again so we ended up with > $800 balance. Tyler has sent a check for the full amount that we paid out and will work out the difference with the utility company, we basically have a credit for future water use. There is also a substantial charge for 5 days of water usage.
    Hide when/ if they came.

On the start of the lease and paying of rent, the commencement date has still not entirely be set or determined. Now that SF is planning to go to Yellow tier as of Friday May 7th 2021 restrictions will further be lifted. This seems like a reasonable point to consider relevant restrictions impacting noisebridge being reduced to a point of suitable operations. Per the lease the rent starts 30 days after restrictions are lifted.

Having a crypto class more often could be very useful, and might help us get more donations.
Also, privacy is where creativity lives, and we're a creative space.

We are having a crypto discussion tommorow night.
Surveilance is about power. It gives power to those who are watching, and takes power from the watched. Usually supporting the already powerful ove the individual/masses.

https://jitsi.noisebridge.io/crypto#config.startWithAudioMuted=true&config.startWithVideoMuted=true
Other spaces will see what we do here at NB, and I think we're being forced to show our values about power structure through surveilance.

I would love to contribute to find ways of providing safety and security without surveilance.

X--it gets cold af by 9 at 272.

Discussion Item 3
Pyconaut- I also want to figure this stuff out early on.
Art in/on the space

Access for artist
Sophia-  as part of renewing the community, we can decide what values we foster. Also, what kind of things went wrong at old bridge?

X- We need more art in the space.  How can we get more art in the space and how do we reach out to artists.  Also how do we allocate space.  What about areas that can be used for other things.  How can we keep from needing a artist commision.  Can we use canvaces or movable pieces.

Tyler- I think at top of stairs might be ok.
Discussion Item 2
Pyconaut- I think Puting Murals where we want ADA corridors would be useful for keeping them clear, we could also do the ceilings, and the stairs and stairway.
Inclusivity, diversity, participation.

Pyconaut- We could also Mural The Rollup door.  neighboor (steve) is interested in helping us with.
Ex: NB pre pandemic was ~90% male.
Also, occasional blow-ups.

X- (showing Panel murals at Curcuit launch) https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/5/d/5/highres_487850645.jpeg
X conflict resolution is a constant challenge. Mediation measures are a good investment.

Noisebridge diversity is severely affected by the state of the space safety (do you fell safe in the space or the mission wise and class wise (classes brought most of our diversity).  Noisebridge used have classes that were majority low income, and had 50% female or nonbinary, and 30% POC.  Gamebridge, and sewing being the ones I noticed the most.

Dan: the panels, art murals even, +1 (as an artist) awesome, like 4'x8'
Sophia- what are good classes?

Pyconaut- I like 4'x4', easier to fit in cars.
How we do this at the beginning will affect who comes back when.

Dan: eithers great, I like 4x8', fundraising connection, like sponsor a panel.  Sponsor an artist, help pay the artist and noisebridge, and get art out of it and help the artist.
X- sewing and crafts have historically been great for bringing in female participants and leadership.

X- Dan are yo volunteering to put up panels.

Dan: not quite, I'd like to make some arts, can't front $1,000 for materials.

Dan- Pyconaut thought about getting the Plywood from boarded up stores, last year.
Sophia- we are getting a chance to decide values for the new noisebridge.

Dan: like the idea of making some fine art surface would require a lot of gesso and some plywood.

Pyconaut- I will help put up panels and prime them.
Things like me driving home class members got a lot of people to feel safe coming to noisebridge late at night.

^ great point

Discussion Item 4
Stitch Master Kyle: [url?] outter shell dot com

Other ideas on projects for the space.
X- We have had issues with harassment before, and places like Double Union started up partly do our failures.

Pyconaut- Robotic parts wall for electronics components, I already have intrest from a few people and am reaching out to see if people will donate parts for it.
Sophia- Understanding what types of harassment we need to look out for is important.

X: Getting general electronics space back up for doing small scale assembly and testing. Basic bench tools, power supplies, oscilloscope and microscope. ideally keep building out to include desktop pick and place with reflow.
Many other hackerspaces and makerspaces keep an eye on our anti harrasment policy and who we ban and how quickly we deal with issues to see of they can tell their own community members if they can go to noisebridge again.

X: This could be a good group project with art https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6n8XLmZ__I Hexagon RGB wall art
We, like most communities have toxic chapters.

Pyconaut- There has been intrest before for building a waterjet, a CNC table, a cnc plasma cutter, heated 3D printer chamber, and a number of other machines.  THis intrest could get people interested in the new space.
Also, X and I have had some great discussions about cameras, but the main point was actually the way in which we communicated. Fostering a culture of respect and open communicaton in the face of disagreement. Feels good man

Jeremy Fielding has some great videos on this subject https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rR9ZU63vnVw&list=PL4njCTv7IRbwDZ-iLPD2GSWrX_a8KFtU4
X- If you don't learn from history you are bound to repeat it.  And noisebridge has a lot of history.

Pyconaut- I also want to build an ADA tool wall for power tools and general tools so that they are easier to access at different hights.  I have a few designs that I am working on.
X- If you see something say something.

Dan- But what do you say, who do you say it to, how do you say it matters as well.

Dan- bring your ladyfriends to Noisebridge. They will have a good time.

FWIW VHS has a ladywelder who would like to help foster women in the shop. Might be others who would want to connect hackers on the gender inclusivity wavelength.

Excellence

[edit | edit source]

Our One Rule is to Be Excellent to Each Other.

(What does that mean? How does the Anti-Harassment Policy fit into this? Are we SURE we know what being Excellent is? This is an important and fundamental conversation at Noisebridge, so let's give it like 120 seconds.)

Don't be a butt, be respectful to others. We are a doocracy.

Participation

[edit | edit source]

Everyone at Noisebridge is a participant at Noisebridge.

(What does that mean? How do you get a door key? Access to Slack, Discuss, etc?)

Pyconaut- As noisebridge reopens we need to discuss this a lot! Virtual engagement, and in person engagement. The different levels of in person engagement and what types of Noisebridge activities are excellent to do at the beginning as we build out. When will classes be ok (in person teacher, remote students).

Sophia - Atm small aperture at physical space for traditional NB stuff. Now we are working to make space suitable for that when the time comes. Physical access should prob start with people familiar with NB.

A Philanthropist at Noisebridge has earned enough trust from the community to open and close the space.

(What does that mean? What do we expect from Philanthropists? How do you become one? etc)

Pyconaut- As noisebridge reopens we need to discuss this a lot!

Membership in Noisebridge entails community Trust in Consensus.

(What does that mean? What do we expect from Members? How do you become a Member? etc)

X Lots of ways to be a member of the community. Capital M Members have made a specific commitment to engage in the broader operations of NB. They are well trusted by the community

Excellence does not discriminate betwen Members and members. M Members can block big C consensus. M Members serve as a voice for teh broader NB community.

Financial Report

[edit | edit source]

Anarchist societies under a capitalist state need money to survive and thrive, yo.

Fundraising Update

[edit | edit source]

How's it all going

Pyconaut- looking at filecoin grants for decentralized web infrastructure, will post stuff on Discuss soon.

Would be happy if someone looked into ADA or education grants that SF might have.

Also hydroponics, disaster prep, and energy independence grants could be useful to research.

X It's excellent to give noisebridge money.

Consensus

[edit | edit source]

Consensus is how the Noisebridge Membership may change how Noisebridge works.

(How does Consensus work? What types of things are good for formal Consensus? What is small-c consensus? What is a "block"?)

2 types: Little c: general buy-in for things that are not permanent.

Big C: Funding, permanent changes to teh space. Takes at least 2 meetings: A proposal, and a Consensus test.

C Consensus requires a quorum of least 4 M Members.

(Add any items which are consensed upon or someone has raised a principle objection for to the Consensus Items History page.)

(Add any new items for consensus to the Current Consensus Items page.)

Discussion

[edit | edit source]

Pre meeting -

Dan will remain a non-Member as long as will be tolerated. That said he appreciates the structure and level of commitment that the few members that there are represent

? The social reality that was created by the physical space at old bridge is gone. Things have also changed a lot since that time

Dan We’ll figure it out—who shows up shows up

? There’s a cost of the social fabric gone, and we need to make a new social fabric. Chance to remake the social fabric and physical fabric of the space

Dan challenge is to keep the tapestry as we reboot

? We can decide social norms now, and bring new bridgers into that as they return

Dan --We'll let people figure it out as they show up.

? What do we plant in the garden here? Space layout affecting our new socialfabricand what people do in the space.

Noisebridge is an international city, we can quickly boot up thanks to our core methods of operations being already well defined.

X First meeting in a long time at a physical Noisebridge. A deceptively small number of people actually maintain the continual functioning of the space.

Discussion Item 1

[edit | edit source]

Cultural fabric at Noisebridge--what do we want our relationship with surveilance to be?

ex: value in remote participation vs. Chelsea Manning capability

Pyconaut- How do we announce that things like mics or cameras are active in the space. How do we let people know where they are. Should we add a no recording area?

Sophia- really don't like thje feeling of being recorded while I'm at the space, feed to internet is also not comfortable.

How do we have remote classes.

X This has been while NB has been closed. I also don't like the idea, we should discuss.

X We could have places that are explicitly mic'd and camera's and by default not recorded.

Sophia Should some places (really) be permanently recorded?

NGALAC is a good model, as it has an on air sign and mic and camera cutoffs.

Dan Traditionially, 5mof is streamed, other examples of recording occasionally in space that can be done without everyone in space recorded.

Also, mics are legally potentially dicey, and not good feels. Cameras are lign of sight.

   Use the space anonymously
   Hide when/ if they came.

Also, privacy is where creativity lives, and we're a creative space.

Surveilance is about power. It gives power to those who are watching, and takes power from the watched. Usually supporting the already powerful ove the individual/masses.

Other spaces will see what we do here at NB, and I think we're being forced to show our values about power structure through surveilance.

I would love to contribute to find ways of providing safety and security without surveilance.

X--it gets cold af by 9 at 272.

Pyconaut- I also want to figure this stuff out early on.

Sophia- as part of renewing the community, we can decide what values we foster. Also, what kind of things went wrong at old bridge?

Discussion Item 2

[edit | edit source]

Inclusivity, diversity, participation.

Ex: NB pre pandemic was ~90% male. Also, occasional blow-ups.

Sophia- what are good classes?

How we do this at the beginning will affect who comes back when.

X- sewing and crafts have historically been great for bringing in female participants and leadership.

Sophia- we are getting a chance to decide values for the new noisebridge.

Things like me driving home class members got a lot of people to feel safe coming to noisebridge late at night.

^ great point

X- We have had issues with harassment before, and places like Double Union started up partly do our failures.

Sophia- Understanding what types of harassment we need to look out for is important.

Many other hackerspaces and makerspaces keep an eye on our anti harrasment policy and who we ban and how quickly we deal with issues to see of they can tell their own community members if they can go to noisebridge again.

We, like most communities have toxic chapters.

Also, X and I have had some great discussions about cameras, but the main point was actually the way in which we communicated. Fostering a culture of respect and open communicaton in the face of disagreement. Feels good man

X- If you don't learn from history you are bound to repeat it. And noisebridge has a lot of history.
