The Metal Shop contains some metal working tools like a manual desktop mill and lathe. |
Rules
- Do not attempt to work with the machines unless you are experienced or have had someone teach you. The machines can be deadly
- Wear protective goggles. Tie your hair and do not wear any loose clothing
- Read through the manuals for the machine you are using
- Apply way oil on the ways for the lathe / milling machine
- After finishing work:
- Vacuum your chips
- Put cutting tools back to where they belong
- Leave the space better than you found it
Equipment
- Grizzly G4015Z Combo Lathe/Mill
- JET-15 Manual mill
- Grizzly G0463 (Equipped with CNC, currently not usable as either CNC or manual mill)
- MaxNCMill
Lathe
We have a Grizzly G4015Z combination lathe / mill with a 3-jaw chuck.
- The lathe is most likely not aligned / leveled, so beware if you are doing precision work.
- The scales are indicated at 0.001" / 0.025mm. Obviously, one of the these is wrong. It's unfortunately the metric -- it should be 0.0254mm.
Mill & Drill Machine
We have a JET-15 milling machine. The manual is elusive and hard to find online, but we keep a copy in a binder in the metalshop.
It mostly works, but:
- The spindle is prone to overheating and needs to be lubricated somehow.
- There is no spindle brake that we know of, you might want to use a strap wrench to hold onto the spindle while tightening / loosening the drawbar.
Tools
On the shelves and under the table in the metal room you should be able to find:
- Cutting tools and tool holders for the lathe. There are some on the shelves and in the chest below the lathe
- Endmills
- Measuring tools and parallels
