Soliciting Donations

Soliciting donations on the behalf of any organization can be tricky and in that vein, here are some guideline to follow.

Before sending communications, please check with #fundraising-wg on slack to get a consensus on the messaging. If you don't have access to slack, please come to a Tuesday meeting and you will find someone who can help.

The reason for consensus here is to avoid problems arising from accidental misrepresentation of the legal status of Noisebridge, making sure Noisebridge is always making a positive impact, keeping relationships with donors healthy, and keeping messaging consistent.

Another important point is to understand with what the community is and isn't comfortable when donations are offered as part of a larger program.

Fundraising_Copy has working examples as any further communication examples are great to post there.

Pitfalls

With any communication it's important to recognize how the communication will be received.

Regardless of disclaimers about personally representing Noisebridge, a well-intended mistake like referring to Noisebridge as a "Maker Space" vs. a "Hacker Space" has implications for donations.

Different people speaking to the same donor without knowing can annoy donors

Associating Noisebridge with poor word choice, grammar, spleling, improper asks or other well-intentioned mistakes can turn off donors, when creating a positive relationship with the donors is more important than any specific donation.
