pond migration — flotsam's report

Flotsam has a list. a real list, with diagrams.

the pond needs to move from the front porch to somewhere upstairs before march 4th. leading candidate: hallway outside the RNA lounge, near the kitchen amp. wide enough. out of the way of the welding class. Beyla is already up there. MC Escher is already up there.

  • Flotsam: we'd need to drain it, move it, refill it. maybe reinforce the base so it doesn't wobble on the hallway floor
  • Quorum: how long does that take
  • Flotsam: an afternoon. i've done it before. just need bodies
  • Eddy: i'm in
  • Stillwater: same
  • Ken: i have a truck

Ken having a truck is noted as extremely useful.

  • Flotsam: target date for the move: saturday february 28th
  • Ripple: that gives us a week of buffer before the class
  • Flotsam: exactly

migration plan approved. Flotsam leads. Ken brings the truck. done.

they spend twenty minutes feeling good about having solved one concrete thing.

mc escher: an origin story

Perry has been staring at MC Escher since he arrived. finally:

  • Perry: i've been thinking about him
  • Eddy: yeah?
  • Perry: he's retired
  • Lumen: he's a duck
  • Perry: he's a retired artist. he had a whole career. very successful. very respected. and then one day he just... stopped. walked away from it all. said he'd spent too long making impossible staircases and optical illusions for other people's appreciation and not enough time doing what he actually loved
  • Quorum: which is
  • Perry: sitting on top of stereos

the table is quiet.

  • Stillwater: that's his whole thing?
  • Perry: that's his whole thing. the gold chain is from the last gallery show. he kept it. the cap is because stereos are drafty
  • Flotsam: (looking at MC Escher) he does look extremely at peace
  • Eddy: he really does
  • Ripple: (to MC Escher) good for you, man

MC Escher does not respond. he is on the amp. he is at peace.

Wheezy arrives, surveys the room, gets the general vibe, gives a thumbs up. stays for ten minutes. leaves. keeping it real, as always.

the charter

then they open the charter document again.

Ripple suggests going clause by clause. they get through the first four:

  1. ducks cannot be monetized — unanimous, no discussion, obviously
  2. ducks cannot be ranked or hierarchized — fine. a few nods
  3. all ducks serve equally; none are more powerful — fine
  4. ducks can be retired but only for physical degradation not ideology — fine

then:

  1. ducks can be removed if their presence becomes harmful (precedent: null pointer)

they stop again.

  • Quorum: okay so last week Stillwater raised the hierarchy question. let's actually talk about it
  • Stillwater: i'm not saying we were wrong. i'm saying that "harmful presence" is doing a lot of work in that sentence and i don't know who gets to define it
  • Eddy: we all do. that's the point. it was unanimous
  • Stillwater: this time
  • Eddy: (pause) yeah. this time
  • Ripple: what would make you feel better about the language
  • Stillwater: i don't know yet. something about process. like it can't just be vibes
  • Tidepool: —
  • Ripple: tidepool you're not here today
  • Lumen: (checking) oh. right. they texted, can't make it

they note Tidepool's absence. move on.

  • Quorum: what if we added something like "requires consensus, not majority"
  • Stillwater: that's better. that's actually better
  • Eddy: we had consensus with null pointer
  • Stillwater: yes. and i want the charter to require that. so it can't happen any other way

they spend forty minutes trying to rewrite clause five. every version either sounds too clinical or reopens a wound.

by the end they have four candidate wordings and no agreement.

  • Ripple: same time next week
  • Lumen: same time next week

Quactions

[edit | edit source]
  • [x] pond migration plan — saturday feb 28, Flotsam leads, Perry brings truck
  • [ ] charter clause 5 — four candidate wordings, none ratified

Notes

[edit | edit source]

duration: 1 hour 55 minutes.

the migration planning took 20 minutes. the charter took the rest.

snacks: Perry brought fancy chips again. different brand this time, to signal commitment.

on the four candidate wordings for clause 5

they're in Lumen's notebook. not reproduced here because none of them are right yet.
