Discussion

[edit | edit source]

the charter

Flotsam was already there when people arrived. had been for half an hour. something spread out on the table — measurements, a hand-drawn diagram. they cleared it away when the meeting started, didn't explain.

Lumen reads the preamble draft from last week. it's good. it was good last week and it's good now.

they read it again. silence.

then clause 5. Stillwater has a new version:

"ducks can be removed from service if their continued presence causes demonstrated harm to guild members or other ducks. this decision requires full consensus. it is not a punishment. it is an act of care."

  • Ripple: "it is not a punishment. it is an act of care."
  • Stillwater: that's the part i needed. it took me a month to figure out that's what i needed
  • Eddy: yeah
  • Quorum: i think that's right
  • Tidepool: (reading it again) yeah. that's right

they go through the rest of the clauses. the final two:

  1. the guild exists to maintain conditions for witness not to control witnesses
  2. humans serve the ducks not the other way around

both pass without discussion. they've been ready for weeks.

Ripple calls for ratification.

vote: unanimous.

the charter is ratified.

a month after they first tried to do it.

  • Lumen: should we say something
  • Ripple: we just did

after the vote

they sit for a while. the pond is quiet. the charter is in Lumen's notebook — the real one, the handwritten one, not the wiki draft.

  • Quorum: it's funny. it took longer than the actual incident
  • Flotsam: the incident had adrenaline. the charter had to be honest
  • Tidepool: i kept thinking the resistance meant something was wrong. like we were avoiding it. but i think we needed to go slow

nobody said anything for a moment.

Durt Gently floats to the edge of the pond closest to Sergeant Bubbles. the two of them — the old guard and the new one — face the same direction.

  • Eddy: (quietly) they look good together
  • Lumen: yeah they do

elan stops by

Elan arrives mid-afternoon, just checking in. hasn't been to a meeting in a while. looks around. the pond. the charter on the table. MC Escher on the amp.

  • Elan: you ratified it?
  • Ripple: just now
  • Elan: (nodding) good. it needed to happen

they don't stay long. (felt right to have them there for it --lumen)

blitzkrieg has news about the shelves

Blitzkrieg swings through on his way somewhere else. he's been coordinating the physical work on a new set of heavy-duty shelves for the downstairs — a project that's been months in the making. nthmost argued the case at multiple tuesday meetings and is covering the cost. Ken and Perry have been helping with the physical work.

  • Blitzkrieg: just wanted to flag — when you move your pond upstairs, the whole downstairs is going to get a real clearout. like a serious one. new shelving, whole reorganization
  • Ripple: how serious
  • Blitzkrieg: pretty serious. it's going to look different when you come back

the guild receives this information.

  • Flotsam: different good or different bad
  • Blitzkrieg: different good, i think. it's been needing it. nthmost's been pushing for it for a while. it's a real thing

Blitzkrieg leaves. the guild sits with the information.

  • Tidepool: did anyone ask the ducks about any of this
  • (silence)
  • Quorum: ...no
  • Tidepool: the welding class, the clearout, the pond moving upstairs — has anyone mentioned any of it to them
  • Ripple: they're ducks
  • Tidepool: i know they're ducks

everyone looks at the pond. Sergeant Bubbles. Admiral Quackbar. Duckminster Fuller. The Intern. Durt Gently. all just sitting there, having not been consulted about any of the upcoming disruption.

  • Eddy: they'll be okay
  • Tidepool: probably. still

on the value question

before they break, Quorum brings back what came up last week — the RDG doesn't generate revenue, the welding class does.

  • Ripple: we talked about this
  • Quorum: i know. i keep thinking about it
  • Eddy: i was at the tuesday meeting a couple weeks ago. nthmost was talking about guilds — like, what they actually are. she said guilds are anarcho-syndicalist mini-Noisebriges. like, the guild owns its own space, sets its own culture, teaches people not just skills but how to be teachers
  • Ripple: she said that
  • Eddy: she said that. and someone asked if guilds need to generate revenue and she basically said — the space runs on relationships and care and knowledge transfer. that IS the value
  • Quorum: (quietly) oh
  • Lumen: we're not failing to generate revenue. we're generating something else
  • Perry: (who has been quietly listening) my D&D campaigns don't generate revenue either

everyone looks at Perry.

  • Perry: some things have value that doesn't show up in the ledger. people learning to be still. to listen. to not fix everything immediately. that's actually rare
  • Lumen: art is its own value
  • Perry: yeah. exactly that

(closer than it's been --lumen)

pond migration reminder

Flotsam reminds everyone: saturday february 28th, the pond moves upstairs. meet at 11am. Ken has the truck. everyone is asked to show up.

  • Flotsam: it's going to take a couple hours. then we come back and the pond is in its new spot.
  • Ripple: and next sunday we meet in the hallway
  • Flotsam: for a month. then it comes back
  • Ripple: (to the ducks) you'll be okay

the ducks do not respond. they are ducks.

Quactions

[edit | edit source]
  • [x] guild charter ratified — full consensus, took a month, worth it
  • [x] preamble included
  • [ ] Quorum to post charter to wiki
  • [x] pond migration confirmed: saturday feb 28, 11am, Ken has truck

Notes

[edit | edit source]

duration: 1 hour 20 minutes. shortest charter meeting by a mile.

snacks: Perry brought the good chips again. and a bottle of sparkling water. the guild is becoming snack-consistent.

the charter is done

it took four meetings and one durtle who moved to the center of the pond at the right moment and one DM who said "my campaigns don't generate revenue either."

the guild is not the same as it was in january. but it's still the guild.

on next week

march 1 is the last meeting before the welding class. then the ducks go upstairs. then nthmost goes to new zealand. then the class. then everything comes back.

we'll be okay.

Next Meeting

[edit | edit source]

Sunday March 1, 1pm. last one before the migration.
