What is Noisebridge?

[edit | edit source]

Noisebridge is a lot of things to different people and is continuously changing based on the people who are currently participation largely based on [do-ocracy](https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Do-ocracy#Be_accountable).

From our by-laws: """The purpose of Noisebridge is to promote and encourage technical, scientific, and artistic skills through individual projects, social collaboration, and education***. Also in the context of these purposes, the corporation shall engage in scientific, charitable and educational activities within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, including but not limited to:

  • Through talks, classes, workshops, collaborative projects, and other activities, to encourage research, knowledge exchange, learning, and mentoring in a safe, clean space.
  • Provide educational spaces for teaching practical skills and theory of technology, science, and art.
  • Provide work space, storage, and other resources for projects related to art, science, and technology that will benefit the individual members' personal growth in their fields of interest, encouraging the individual members to share their projects and knowledge for the betterment of society through art, science and technology.
  • To create, learn, and teach, individually and as a group, inviting members of the community in the San Francisco area and the world.
  • To develop, support the development of, and provide resources for the development of free and open source software and hardware for the benefit of society.
  • Collaboration across disciplines for the benefit of cultural, charitable, and scientific causes.
  • To foster, by all legal means, the common purposes of its participants.
  • To conduct or engage in all lawful activities in furtherance of the stated purposes or those incidental to them."""

What does anarchism mean?

[edit | edit source]

This is a frequent topic of discussion within the community to the point that there is a [whole page of suggested readings](https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Anarchy) (10/10 - highly recommend!) . To loosely summarize, anarchism within Noisebridge means an attempt to minimize structural hierarchies within the community - i.e. """Many rules but no rulers""".

How does Noisebridge Work?

[edit | edit source]

Great question rhetorical audience! If you want a more in-depth discussion check out the [manual](https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Manual) devoted to this topic.

At a high level:

  • Rules are made via a [consensus process](https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Consensus_Process)
  • As a 501c3 the space is kept open via donations and membership dues (though we are currently in the red).
  • Conflicts escalating order: ask-to-disengage, ask-to-leave, ban
  • In extreme/repeated cases people will be banned from the space (both physical and digital).

Minimal Set of Rules to Stay in Good Standing

[edit | edit source]

By taking part in our community (both physical and digital) you agree to comply with our [Community Standards](https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Community_Standards) and [Anti-Harassment Policy](https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Anti-Harassment_Policy).

The main tool used to keep the peace is an [ask-to-leave](https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/AskToLeave). If you are asked to leave please respect the request even if you believe it to be unreasonable. Within the community acknowledging an ATL is not an admission of guilt however failing to comply has been grounds for permanent ban.
